Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, West Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-built earthenware bowl with a hemispherical form that is comprised of a rounded bottom, a deep basin, and a thick rim. The exterior is covered with dense linear, circular, and geometric motifs formed via incised strokes and stippling. The surface has a pinkish tone imbuing the motifs with warmth. In Papua New Guinea, both men and women traditionally have been involved in the process of making ceramics. Woman have typically shape the walls of the vessels while men have been in charge of painting and creating the motifs. A wonderful example of this traditional pottery!
