Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A gorgeous handmade pottery bowl with a pointed base and broad, annular rim. The exterior of the immense vessel is adorned with an intricate motif of dense curvilinear striations that spiral around ovoid shapes formed from applied pottery cords with impressed segmentation and painted in vibrant hues of tan, russet, and chocolate brown. Size: 12" in diameter x 4" H (30.5 cm x 10.2 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

  • Condition: Two collection labels on interior along with "128 / M" inscribed in yellow pigment. One barely distinguishable light nick and a few soft abrasions to rim. Char marks and some stable hairline surface fissures are visible on interior commensurate with age and use. Otherwise excellent and Lucite display stand is included.
