Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle/East Sepik River Region, Korewori River area, ca. 1920s to 1940s CE. A hand-built red clay stone head representing an abstract ancestral figure. The head is of a minimalist, bulbous form with a bulging forehead, pinched eye sockets above a perforated nose, and petite, pursed lips above a massive chin. Beneath the face are tapering columns of incised striations perhaps representing scarification or a chinstrap for a larger headdress. Size: 3" W x 6.7" H (7.6 cm x 17 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
