Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Upper Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A large and hand-carved wooden beater mallet used to strike a large garamut slit-gong drum. The thick handle allows the musician to wield and grip the mallet effortlessly, and a cylindrical striking head has both smooth sides for the creation of different sounds when striking the drum. The handle is sculpted to feature a square loop for suspension decorated with a lovely geometric design. A band of anthropomorphic faces and abstract motifs is featured midway down the implement, while the area between the band and handle is embellished with a decorative incised ring. Covered in layers of light-brown patina, this is a wonderful example from Papua New Guinea! Size: 2" W x 25.5" H (5.1 cm x 64.8 cm)
