Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A sago pounder made from highly-burnished palm wood with a large cylindrical club on one end and an intricately-carved elongated crocodile head on the other. The pounding end has a broad, well-worn surface meant for pulverizing palm stems and other plant-based material. Sago is a starch extracted from the spongy center of various tropical palm stems and is a major food staple for the indigenous Papuans. Size: 2" W x 25" H (5.1 cm x 63.5 cm); 4.85" H (12.3 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Light wear on surface commensurate with age, including some scratching. The pounding end seems to have been used and has deposits and patina consistent with that. Rich patina overall.
