Description:

Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River, early-mid 20th century CE. A heavy wooden figure of a crouching woman with long arms that she is using to leverage herself from the roughly square base. Her face is round, with deep-set eyes and a large nose, turned so that it is slightly offset from looking straight ahead. In this culture, when someone died, the family hired a special carver or priest to fashion a figure of the deceased. This figure could be kept in the home and asked for advice. Comes with custom stand. Size: 5.2" L x 7" W x 20.2" H (13.2 cm x 17.8 cm x 51.3 cm); height on stand: 22.25" (56.5 cm)
