Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Aceh people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lovely example of a Sikin Pasangan (also Sikkin Peusangan) sword of an elegant form. The hand-carved wooden hilt has a forked pommel end and is known as a hulu buaya (literally "crocodile hilt") because of its resemblance to the large-mouthed reptile. The Pasangan-style blade is characteristically elongated with a gently curved profile and a sharpened edge opposite the thick spine, and the spine bears a shallow fuller running almost the entire length. Sikin Pasangan swords were typically made with a straight, Panyang (cutlass) style blade, but the Aceh War against the Dutch afforded Acehnese weaponsmiths with ample quantities of curved saber-style blades. Size: 2.3" W x 33.5" H (5.8 cm x 85.1 cm); (length of blade): 28.3" L (71.9 cm).
