Description:

West Africa, Togo, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely-carved wooden personal scepter with a tubular handle, a cresting shoulder, and an abstract zoomorphic head serving as a finial. The expressive finial has bulging eyes, a perky nose, tab-shaped ears, and a gaping mouth with pointed fangs and a projecting tongue. Areas of faded red pigment are rubbed across the head to bring out more of the intricately-carved details, and smooth patina has formed across most surfaces. Size: 3.8" W x 23.25" H (9.7 cm x 59.1 cm); 25.125" H (63.8 cm) on included custom stand.
