Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay Province, Trobriand Islands (sometimes Kiriwina Islands), Massim people, ca. early 20th century CE. A fantastic example of a hand-carved wooden dance club with a wide handle, a semicircular pommel, a slightly flared neck, and a flattened body terminating with a semicircular panel. The body and pommel have hand-drilled suspension holes meant to hold ornaments when used in dance ceremonies. The front of the body is carved with vertical curvilinear shapes. A lovely dark, nearly black patina covers the entirety of this ceremonial carving. Size: 27.75" L x 3.5" W (70.5 cm x 8.9 cm); 29.375" H (74.6 cm) on included custom stand.
