West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. The Yoruba use wood to carve figures of people they see in their everyday lives. After the arrival of the British Empire, many of those subjects became colonial figures. With them came missionaries and Christian priests, who were powerful and often controversial figures in colonial society. This carving is of a priest, wearing a brightly colored stole and alb and holding a staff with a carving of a human head on it. Size: 11.6" W x 25.75" H (29.5 cm x 65.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
