Description:

Ancient Egyptian, Third Intermediate Period, likely from the 22nd or 23rd Dynasty, ca. 8th century BCE. This vividly painted wooden sarcophagus fragment features a representation of Horus in his falcon form, adorned with a prominent solar disk upon his head- symbolizing his fusion with Ra, the sun god. The falcon's wings are displayed in a sweeping arc, composed of vertical bands of red, black, and blue feathers, bordered with delicately detailed scalloped patterns. The use of lapis-blue, ochre-red, and golden-yellow pigments reflects the symbolic palette of divine protection and power. This piece likely adorned the chest or upper torso of a mummy case, serving as both symbolic protection and an invocation of divine power. Size: 7.75" W x 11" H (19.7 cm x 27.9 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.

This piece is an excellent example of late-period Egyptian funerary art, illustrating the enduring fusion of solar and royal symbology in burial practices of the time. The fragment likely once formed part of the lid or side panel of an elite sarcophagus, designed to ensure the deceased's rebirth and celestial protection. The solar imagery underscores themes of resurrection and the eternal journey of the soul under Horus-Ra's guardianship.
