Description:

Western Europe, Anglo-Saxon / Celtic / Viking, Early-Medieval, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A rare small hammer composed of a solid bronze head mounted on an iron shaft. The rectangular head, cast with a flat striking face and compact proportions, is formed from bronze and mounted on the narrow shaft, of nearly pure iron, which suggests the tool was designed for precision rather than heavy impact. While the exact craft use cannot be stated with certainty, its size and non-ferrous head make it well suited for fine metalworking, such as a jeweler's or artisan's hammer for shaping softer metals like gold, silver, or copper alloys. A rare survival of an early medieval tool, reflecting the technical sophistication of Anglo-Saxon craft traditions. Size: 7.75" L x 1.5" W (19.7 cm x 3.8 cm)
