Description:

Native American, Southwest, Navajo or Pueblo, ca. mid 20th century CE. A stunning and quite sizeable ring with a very large natural turquoise stone of mesmerizing blue-green hues and teal, seafoam, and russet inclusions in an elaborately designed sterling silver setting, surrounding the turquoise stone with seven curvilinear and one prominent spiral motif interspersed with five large granules. All is set to a shank that bifurcates at both ends. What's more, the incised bird with outspread wings depicted on the back of the silver setting, perhaps the mark of an early Navajo (Navaho) jewelry artisan, is particularly endearing. Size: turquoise stone measures 1.875" L x .875" W (4.8 cm x 2.2 cm); US ring size 6.25; Total weight: 28.7 grams.

Provenance: ex-James Byrnes collection; James Byrnes was the first curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art, which is now known as LACMA, from 1946 – 1953
