Lot 53
West Africa, Nigeria, Idoma culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A dance crest with a compelling tri-faced design, carved from wood and adorned with bold red, white, and black pigments. Each of the three stylized and vigilant visages is positioned back-to-back, evoking themes of multiplicity, duality, and expanded perception. Known among the Idoma as an ungulali, or flute mask, such crests traditionally appear at important funerals, harvest celebrations, and communal festivities - often signaled by the haunting sound of a flute. The flared base rests atop the dancer's head, with small drilled holes along the rim still threaded with aged cotton and vegetal fiber cords for secure attachment during performance. Size: 6" W x 11.5" H (15.2 cm x 29.2 cm)
