Lot 78A
Near East, Palestine, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a fine example of a traditional pottery water or storage jar, crafted by women for everyday domestic use. The jar features a rounded globular body with lug handles, a tall, flaring neck, and a flat base - all formed by hand from coarse earthen clay. Its surface is richly adorned with red and cream geometric motifs, including patterns that resemble palm fronds and wheat heads, symbols often associated with fertility and sustenance. The village of Sinjil became a major center of pottery production during the late Ottoman period and British Mandate era. The jars produced there were especially admired for their decorative quality. It was common for women from surrounding villages to bring their pre-formed vessels to Sinjil, where they would be decorated with painted motifs. Size: 10" W x 14" H (25.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
