Description:

Melanesia, late 19th - early 20th century. Long classic war club of a dense hardwood, with distinctive spatulate blade bearing relief T-form face with curved ridge nose, and intricate incised pattern highlighted with white lime. Fine burnished dark patina. “In fighting, blows were struck with the edges; the ‘noses’ were used to hook aside spear thrusts before striking past the opponent’s guard.” -Akin, 2013 via Power and Prestige: The Art Clubs of Oceania, p.298.
