West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden spoon with a finely-detailed face handle, perhaps representative of an ancestor, perforated through the coiffure on the verso. The spoon portion has a recessed cavity colored with a powder-white pigment, hence the name "chalk spoon" . A thick, integral handle joins both scoop and ancestor head. Size: 11.75" L (29.8 cm)
