Description:

Native American, Eastern Woodlands, Late Archaic to Early Woodland period, ca. 1500 to 500 BCE. A finely polished stone birdstone carved in a graceful, abstract form with a raised head and elongated body suggesting a perched bird. Birdstones are among the most recognizable ceremonial objects of the Late Archaic and Early Woodland cultures of the Eastern Woodlands and were typically crafted from carefully selected stones and polished to a smooth finish. Their precise function remains debated, though they are widely believed to have served as ritual or status objects, possibly mounted on atlatls or worn as symbolic ornaments.
