Description:

Edward Sheriff Curtis (American, 1868-1952). "Chief Joseph." Original goldtone (orotone) photograph, hand-produced in 1999 from a vintage 1908 negative, edition 45 of 250, published by the Curtis Centennial Project. Inscribed in the negative lower right, with Curtis Centennial Project label and numbering on verso. This powerful orotone captures the commanding presence of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, one of the most revered tribal leaders of the 19th century. Photographed by Curtis in 1903 at his Seattle studio, Joseph's portrait became one of the most iconic images in "The North American Indian" project. The photograph reflects not only his noble pride but also the deep tragedies endured by his people. After years of resisting displacement, Joseph famously surrendered in 1877 with the words: "I will fight no more forever." His legacy as a strategist, leader, and voice of conscience continues to resonate as a symbol of resilience and dignity. Size of photo: 13.25" W x 16.25" H (33.7 cm x 41.3 cm); of frame: 18.8" W x 22" H (47.8 cm x 55.9 cm)

Curtis was both the pioneer and most ardent proponent of the goldtone process, which he described as capable of retaining the translucency, life, and iridescence often lost in conventional prints. This edition, issued by the Curtis Centennial Project after years of technical experimentation, demonstrates that brilliance with unparalleled depth, clarity, and archival stability. Chief Joseph's friendship with Curtis proved pivotal in enabling the photographer to gain the trust of numerous tribes, shaping what remains one of the most extraordinary visual and ethnographic records in American history.
