Description:

Egypt, probably pre-Dynastic/Naqada II period, ca. 3500 to 3000 BCE. A lovely piriform mace head made of a beautiful swirling grey and creamy white quartz with a columnar drilled center and a polished, smooth surface. It has a very pleasing weight in the hand and would have been mounted on perishable material in its original use. Maces like this one have been found in Naqada II period tombs of all sexes, and the form seems to have replaced the earlier disc-shaped mace heads of the Naqada I period. They may be an indication of the authority of the buried person, but little is certain about this very early period in Egyptian history. Size: 2" W x 2.2" H (5.1 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sotheby's, New York "Antiquities" auction (June 7, 2005, part of lot 122); ex-private German collection, owned since 1980
