Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A hand-carved wooden sarcophagus mask showcasing a nicely modeled face. The bulging eyes, prominent nose, full lips, and sweeping brow create the stylized presentation, and a coiffure or cap rests low on the forehead. Masks like this were attached to the front of relatively uncomplicated sarcophagi - rather than carve them into the full lid -- as a means of representing the dead while keeping costs down for the remaining living family members. Size: 3.5" L x 5.25" W x 9.1" H (8.9 cm x 13.3 cm x 23.1 cm); 11.875" H (30.2 cm) on included custom stand.
