Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A large banded calcite alabaster vessel comprised of a flat base, gently-expanding walls, and a flared, inward-sloping lip characteristic of the ancient Late Dynastic Egyptian style. While opaque under normal conditions, a light placed on the surface or inside the body reveals a myriad of orange and brown mineral bands which would otherwise go unnoticed. Several rows of horizontal carving lines can be seen on the interior of the vessel, and are consistent with the arduous grinding process needed to hollow the interior. Size: 4" W x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm).
