Egypt, New Kingdom/Third Intermediate Period, 1550 to 712 BCE. A carved and smoothed sandstone staff handle in a conical form, with a hollowed shaft drilled using a copper drill about one quarter of the way into the sandstone length. The sandstone is beautiful banded tan and reddish brown. This item would have been placed on the end of a staff to form a handle. Staffs played an important role in demonstrating authority in ancient Egypt, as well as in carrying religious and ceremonial implements, and were made to be beautiful.
