Description:

Egypt, new Kingdom, ca. 1400 BCE. Black schist carved cosmetic kohl tube in the form of a palm or petal-shaped column capitol showing a lotus flower in different stages of bloom, some in bud, and with a baboon on each side amongst the lotus plants. Drilled opening through the center of the cylinder. A rare and beautiful example.

The iconographic program is rich with Egyptian symbolic meaning. The lotus — seshen — was the preeminent symbol of creation, rebirth, and the sun's daily renewal, emerging from the primordial waters of Nun to bring forth light and life. The baboon, sacred to Thoth — god of wisdom, writing, and the moon — was also closely associated with the rising sun, baboons being observed to vocalize at dawn in apparent greeting of the solar disk. Together, lotus and baboon on a cosmetic vessel evoke themes of daily renewal, divine protection, and the regenerative power of the feminine toilette within Egyptian cosmological thought. Size: 3”H x 1.125”W (7.6 x 2.9cm).
