Description:

Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 30th dynasties, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A vivid blue faience amulet depicting the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet, seated on a throne in traditional divine posture. The goddess is shown with a powerful feline face, sharply modeled muzzle, and forward-facing ears - iconographic traits unmistakably identifying her as Sekhmet, one of ancient Egypt's most formidable deities. Sekhmet was revered as a goddess of war, disease, and divine vengeance, yet also honored as a protector and healer. Her duality was central to Egyptian cosmology: both destroyer and savior, invoked in times of plague and for warding off illness and malevolent spirits. Size: 1.125" L x 2.125" H (2.9 cm x 5.4 cm) Size: 1.125" L x 2.125" H (2.9 cm x 5.4 cm)

Small amulets such as this one were worn for personal protection, often buried with the deceased or carried during life to call upon her fierce guardianship. The craftsmanship is typical of the Late Period, with crisply defined incised details, especially in the throne's structure and the body's contours. Black pigment remains in the recessed areas, enhancing the goddess's features and lending expressive depth to the piece.
