Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Egypt, Third Intermediate period, 21st to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1069 to 653 BCE. A remarkable faience amulet in the form of a naked dwarf known as the protective deity Pataikos. Enveloped in vibrant blue glaze with black hair and elbows, the squat figure stands akimbo with legs bent at knees. A thick collar necklace hangs just below his enlarged head. The name comes from the description of similar Phoenician examples in the writings of Herodotus. Possibly linked to the craftsman god Ptah, these figures are closely related to figures of Horus-the-Savior seen on magical stelae known as cippi. Size: 0.75" W x 1.75" H (1.9 cm x 4.4 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-Philip Mitry collection, noted antiquarian in Egypt, prior to 1951
