Egypt, Late Period, ca. 712-30 BCE. Squatting bronze Sakhmet wearing a sun disc and uraeus headdress. Striated tripartite wig. The goddess is squatting with her knees drawn up to the chest and is wearing a tight fitted dress that reduces her body to a block-like shape. Block statues are a characteristic Egyptian creation that first emerged during the Middle Kingdom. Sakhmet was originally the warrior goddess, but also considered to be a healer and protectress against epidemics. 1.7"H, without stand.Provenance: ex-private NYC collection, acquired in the 1950s-60s, to last owner by descent, thence, US art market.
