Description:

Egypt, middle to Late Period, ca. 1000 - 300 BCE. Matching pair of large bronze eyes with individually cast arched brows, both are inset with a black obsidian iris and carved white stone sclera. Very nice examples. Homemade lucite display stand.

Eyes of this type were inlaid into mummy masks to animate the deceased and establish a living divine presence in the afterlife. The Egyptians believed the eyes of a mummy mask were a critical threshold between the living and the dead — through them, the deceased could see, perceive offerings, and participate in eternal life. The combination of bronze, obsidian, and white stone reflects the Egyptian craftsman's sophisticated understanding of contrasting materials to achieve maximum visual and spiritual impact. Size: 3.5”W (8.9cm) each.

Provenance: Ex. Robert Deutsch, Archaeological Center, Tel Aviv about 25 years ago.
