Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasties, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A diminutive leaded bronze votive figure of Osiris, the ancient Egyptian god of the dead and lord of the afterlife, cast with stylized yet recognizable form. The god stands mummiform, arms crossed in front of the chest, likely once holding the crook and flail - symbols of kingship and divine authority. Crowning the head is the tall atef crown, its central plume flanked by lateral feathers, though softened by age and corrosion. Despite its modest scale, the statuette carries profound meaning. Figures of Osiris such as this were mass-produced during the Late Dynastic period, when personal piety flourished and small bronze icons were left as temple offerings or placed in tombs to secure divine protection. Size: 0.5" L x 0.8" W x 3" H (1.3 cm x 2 cm x 7.6 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The use of leaded bronze would have given durability while allowing for relatively fine detail, even though surface encrustation now cloaks much of the figure in a green patina mottled with earthen deposits. Such images reaffirm the central role of Osiris in Egyptian religious life: embodying resurrection, eternal kingship, and the promise of rebirth for the devotee. Though time has softened its features, the silhouette of crown and posture remain unmistakable - a compact yet powerful statement of belief in the continuity of life beyond death.
