Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved pendant of elegant form depicting a broad portrait of Bes, the dwarf deity known as a protector of women, children, and the weak. Bes watches over the household and wards off evil magic and spirits with his "sa" sign. Furrowed brows, lozenge-shaped eyes, a wide nose, and an incised beard constitute the expressive visage, and an integral suspension loop protrudes above his brow. Size: 1.56" W x 1.16" H (4 cm x 2.9 cm)
