Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic period, 26th to 30th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 343 BCE. A wonderful carnelian scarab amulet featuring hieroglyphs for golden Horus - one of the titles of the pharaoh - comprised of a falcon atop the symbol for gold. The right-facing falcon holds a flail, that perhaps serves as a determinative, and wears the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. Alternatively, the scarab features smooth wings beneath the thorax, a ribbed head, a notched clypeus, and slender legs slanted in both directions. These hieroglyphs were likely praising the pharaoh. Given the limited surface on scarab bases, seal carvers were often very creative in using as few hieroglyphs and signs as possible in order to convey their message. Size: 0.6" L x 0.4" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: private Danvers, Massachusetts, USA collection, acquired by descent; ex-USA collection, acquired before 2000
