Description:

Egypt, Late Period to Ptolemaic, ca. 4th to 1st century BCE. Gesso over linen with natural mineral pigments. A rare and beautifully preserved funerary cartonnage panel, executed in vivid polychrome gesso over linen, featuring elaborate symbolic decoration including a striding ibis, a winged protective deity, and hieroglyphic inscriptions. Would have adorned the upper torso of a mummified individual of elite status. Dominating the composition is a depiction of the ibis, sacred to Thoth, the god of wisdom, writing, and divine reckoning. To the lower section appears a large scarab beetle flanked by outspread wings, symbolizing rebirth and solar renewal, while vertical bands of stylized lotus blossoms, rosettes, and faience-tile-inspired inlays frame the scene. At center, a winged goddess, possibly Ma’at or Isis, stretches across the composition, offering divine protection to the deceased. Size: 17" W x 24" H (43.2 cm x 61 cm)

Painted in brilliant hues of cobalt blue, deep red, ochre, green, and black, the scene is both cosmological and funerary, evoking the cycle of death and resurrection central to Egyptian theology during the late dynasties. Panels such as this were crafted from linen and gesso, shaped to the mummy and painted after hardening — a practice widespread in Saite, Persian, and Ptolemaic periods.
