Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A remarkable set of 27 beads skillfully carved from the bone of a bovine or ungulate and incised with anthropomorphic designs. All covered in a lustrous finish, the set features 14 annular beads, 10 flat beads with a rectangular top and trapezoidal body, 2 rounded bicone beads, and 1 flat figural bead of a bust wearing a flat headdress with target-like eyes, two dots as nostrils, a slight smile, a square chin, and hands together at his chest. The 10 flat rectangular/trapezoidal beads are incised with geometric designs of target-like shapes, slanted lines, dots, and either one or two bands between the top and body. A lovely variety of intriguing adornments! Size of largest: 0.9" W x 1.1" H (2.3 cm x 2.8 cm)
