Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A lovely textile fragment composed of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of wheat, fuchsia, cream, marigold, cobalt, and citrine. A pair of vertical rods have red bodies and several circular nodules which mimic the style of Roman mosaic glass, and a separate circular disc boasting similar mosaic-style embellishments is presented in one corner. A colorful example of fine Coptic artistry! Mounted within a glass display frame. Size (textile): 9.75" L x 9.75" W (24.8 cm x 24.8 cm); size (display frame): 14.125" W x 11.125" H (35.9 cm x 28.3 cm).

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s to 1990s

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger textile composition. Losses and loosening to some interior and peripheral areas, with light fading to scattered areas of original coloration, and minor creasing. Nice traces of original coloration and iconography throughout.
