Description:

Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A lovely textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in a tan-and-brown bi-chrome presentation. Displayed on the fragment are a trio of dancers shown in striding poses, with one arm raised and the other draped behind the abdomen, and with minimalist faces topped with lobed coiffures. The figures frolic amongst a field of foliate motifs and in-between tall columns, and above their heads are pairs of abstract avian creatures with circular eyes and lowered heads. A fine example of Coptic textile artistry! Mounted inside a display frame. Size (textile): 6.625" W x 5.25" H (16.8 cm x 13.3 cm); size (frame): 10.125" W x 8.125" H (25.7 cm x 20.6 cm).
