Ancient Egypt, Early Dynastic Period, 1st to 2nd Dynasty, ca. 3100 to 2686 BCE. A petite frog figurine carved from porous stone with faint traces of turquoise-hued glaze. The charming amphibian sits up on its front legs and has retracted hind legs, a bulbous body, and a tapered head topped with a pair of recessed ovoid eyes. The ancient Egyptians associated frogs with the waters of the Nile as well as birth, creation, and annual rejuvenation of the land. Concurrently, the frog-headed goddess Heqet (also Heket) is a very old deity associated with the birthing process. Size: 3.7" L x 2.6" W x 2.5" H (9.4 cm x 6.6 cm x 6.4 cm)

  • Condition: Minor nicks to base, legs, body, and head, with light oxidation residue within two recessed areas of body, fading to original glaze pigmentation, and softening to some finer facial details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and light remains of original glaze pigment throughout.
