Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom / Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1550 to 712 BCE. A trio of game pieces from "senet", or "passing", the most popular of the Egyptian board games. Two are glazed faience, with mushroom-like shapes. The third is alabaster and is a disc with space for a tab to attach it to a base. Senet simulated the soul's journey through the underworld on the quest for immortality. Size of largest: 0.7" H (1.8 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired between January 2015 and December 2016; (blue) ex-Sands of Time Ancient Art, Washington, D.C., USA; ex-private Du Bois collection, New York, USA, acquired in Egypt between 1900 and 1907, then by descent to family members; exhibited in Museum of Man, San Diego, California, USA in 1968; (tall white) ex-private Dubai, United Arab Emirates collection; (short white) ex-private Del Mar, California, USA collection
