Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A gorgeous faience amulet of an amphoriskos set in a gilt silver torq-form ring. Enveloped in a vibrant shade of azure, the conical vessel features a vertically ribbed body and an arching handle that is strung with the gilt silver wire to attach to the ring. The ancient Egyptians considered faience to be a magical substance, filled with the undying shimmer of the sun and imbued with powers of rebirth. Size of amulet: 1" L x 0.4" W (2.5 cm x 1 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.7" W (2.5 cm x 1.8 cm); US ring size: 6; silver quality: 90.85%; weight: 3.9 grams
