Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. This is a small, perfectly-shaped faience amulet with a loop for suspension. The standing figure is in the shape of a standing cat-headed goddess, Bastet, who represented fertility and motherhood. Thousands of mummified cats and kittens were given as offerings to Bastet at temples in her honor, and a small amulet like this one was probably made to be worn or placed upon an altar to demonstrate devotion to her and seek her protection. Gorgeous level of craftsmanship and detail. Size: 0.6" L x 0.35" W x 1.9" H (1.5 cm x 0.9 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
