Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A beautiful necklace composed of six faience bead strands - hundreds of faience seed beads of pale red, varying shades of blue, and creamy beige hues ranging from dark to light tones. To the Egyptians, faience was known as "tjehnet," meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and were also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. A stunning example of wearable ancient art created from hundreds of ancient Egyptian faience beads. With a modern string, clasp, and two gilded beads. Length of strand: 25" L (63.5 cm)
