Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A gorgeous necklace constructed with dozens of petite faience seed beads glazed in polychrome hues. Centered on the necklace is a blue-glazed faience pendant depicting Khnum, the ram-headed creator god thought to be the source of the Nile River. The plinth is secured within a vintage gilt copper base and hangs from a setting formed from 61% gold (equivalent to 14K+). Both the dorsal pillar and setting clasp are stamped with petite hieroglyphic symbols. Size (necklace): 18.9" L (48 cm); (Khnum pendant): 0.25" W x 1.25" H (0.6 cm x 3.2 cm); (w/ setting): 2.3" H (5.8 cm); quality of gold: 61% (equivalent to 14K+)

Provenance: ex-Leonard Auctions, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired from a local estate, collected between 1970 and 1990

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Faience beads and Khnum pendant are ancient; stringing, 14K+ gold setting, and gilt copper components are modern. One stable fissure beneath right shoulder of Khnum pendant. Beads are intact and very good with only minor abrasions.
