Lot 5A
Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A faience beaded net-like funerary shroud composed of tubular and seed blue-green beads strung in a lattice pattern. Affixed to the surface are larger mold-made faience amulets, including a scarab with separately attached wings and three amulets representing the Sons of Horus in profile. The elements appear to have been gathered together and restrung in modern times to suggest how such nets would have originally appeared when laid over a mummy before their organic threads decayed. Horus's sons were charged with protecting the internal organs of mummies, as they had originally been charged with protecting the body of Osiris - such amulets were often tucked into the linen wrappings or secured to beaded nets such as this. Scarabs represented the divine manifestation of the morning sun, the deity Khepri, who was believed to roll the solar disk across the horizon at daybreak. Size of case: 20.25" L x 14.25" W (51.4 cm x 36.2 cm); netting: 19" L x 7" W (48.3 cm x 17.8 cm)
