Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A beautiful and wearable necklace composed from dozens of faience beads in seed and tube forms in hues of coffee, citrine, turquoise, and sage. The upper ends are filled with small seed beads, and the necklace splits into 5 separate lower strands along the bottom. To the Egyptians, faience was known as "tjehnet," meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and were also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. Strung in modern times and capped with a modern brass clasp and loop combo, this is a lovely example of ancient Egyptian art! Size (necklace): 24.5" L (62.2 cm); size of largest bead (tube): 0.375" L (1 cm).
