Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A fascinating shroud assembled of ancient glazed faience beads, forming a netted composition designed to resemble a stylized anthropomorphic face. Originally, this beadwork would have been laid across the upper portion of a sarcophagus before the tomb was sealed. Although the original fiber netting has long since decomposed, the beads have been carefully restrung to approximate their original appearance. The beads are primarily tubular and disc-shaped, arranged to depict a stylized face featuring a yellow nose, large eyes, and a petite mouth. Below the visage is a layered broad collar, a winged scarab motif symbolizing rebirth, and a row of four canopic jars - each topped with the head of one of the Sons of Horus, the traditional protectors of the deceased's internal organs. Size: 10" L x 5.25" W (25.4 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-T.F. Holy Lands collection, formed since the 1960s
