Description:

Egypt, 21st Dynasty (Third Intermediate Period) onward, ca. 1077 to 330 BCE. This is a strand of colorful faience beads that would have been used as a shroud over a mummy. When fired, these faience beads turned red, yellow, green, and orange. From the Third Intermediate Period onward, beads like this would have been woven into shrouds incorporating designs often relating to Egyptian funerary beliefs. For example, the Louvre holds one of these shrouds which depicts Anubis, a scarab, and pillars representing Osiris. Strand would be approximately 71" if laid out (180 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.
