Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A rare Egyptian figure that was mold-formed from faience to depict a pair of standing avian creatures, each with the human head of a female deity. Perhaps depicting Sekhmet, Tefnut, Shu, and/or Bastet, these abstract avian creatures could also perhaps represent the 2 halves of the soul known as the Ba and the Ka. A short series of hieroglyphs is incised into the underside of the rectangular plinth, and remains of both blue and yellow-green glaze are visible across the birds. Size: 1.69" L x 1.1" W x 1.73" H (4.3 cm x 2.8 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-Superior Gallery, 1976; ex-Blumka collection, 1958; ex-Minneapolis Institute of Art, bequeathed by Ms. Lily Place, 1929, ref. no. 29.17.25; ex-Cairo Suq, Egypt
