Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic-Roman period, ca. 3rd century BCE -2nd century CE. Fashioned as the face of a funerary mask, with stylized almond-shaped eyes, arched brows and a small closed mouth, the visage framed by a striped nemes-style headdress. The surface composed of closely set glazed faience elements in cream, brown and red tones, preserving an attractive polychrome appearance. Fragments of this type were used as decorative funerary appliqués during the later phases of Egyptian mortuary production, particularly in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, when faience and composite materials were widely employed for mummy equipment.
