Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Period, 1550 to 712 BCE. This is a necklace made of Egyptian blue faience tube and spacer beads and over fifteen ancient 20K gold bead accents; there is a central pendant that is a cobalt blue glaze amulet in the shape of four Udjat (Wadjet) eyes. That shape is common on funerary amulets and is also known as the Eye of Horus or the Eye of Ra; the British Museum has a large collection of such amulets. Faience, known as "tjehnet" in ancient Egyptian, means "brilliant" or "dazzling" and was a symbol of rebirth and the afterlife; the production of faience was a major industry in Egypt. The other substance here, gold, was considered "the skin of the gods" and used in funerary objects. This necklace is a beautiful reminder of the sacred materials in ancient Egyptian culture. Size: 18-1/4" L (46.4 cm).
