Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A remarkable mold-formed faience goose amulet with a backwards turned neck and the head resting on the incised wings. The amulet is perforated through the base for suspension and the underside is etched with hieroglyphs. The Egyptian or Nile goose was sacred to the ancient Egyptians and held symbolism in mythological narratives. The goose's posture indicates it is asleep, and could symbolize resurrection. The lovely blue glaze is symbolic of water and the Nile, and perhaps this amulet was to ensure plentiful rainfall and flooding for a fertile rejuvenation of crops. Size: .81" L x .5" W (2.1 cm x 1.3 cm)
