Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca 1070 to 332 BCE. A stunning necklace comprised of dozens and dozens of disc-shaped faience beads of cobalt blue, periwinkle, golden yellow, and creamy beige hues - and at the center, a marvelous aqua faience amulet finely carved to represent Thoth, the god of writing, accounting, and other intellectual pursuits. Although Thoth typically was associated with the ibis, the god would also assume the form of a baboon in certain tales of Egyptian lore. A wonderful and wearable example of modern fashion meets ancient art! Size (necklace): 16.8" L (42.7 cm); (thoth amulet): 0.25" W x 0.4" H (0.6 cm x 1 cm).
To the Egyptians, faience was known as "tjehnet," meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements. Faience beads were used in jewelry as well as special burial nets carefully placed over mummies.

Condition:
Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Faience beads are ancient, and stringing, loop, and clasp are modern. Minor nicks as well as light calcifications on some beads and minor softening to some Thoth amulet details, otherwise intact and very good. Smooth surface textures and great remains of original colors throughout.
